Mothership Panic Cards
A downloadable game
Hello Everyone, this page is for a playtest of a rule module for the TTRPG Mothership by Tuesday Knight Games feel free to download this module for free and try it out in your next game. I'd be happy for some feedback. If you have any questions, ask away in the comments.
Rules
Whenever a panic check is called, the warden draws the top card and compares the top right card number to the characters stress level. If the stress level is below the number, the player passed the panic check and the card gets shuffled back in the deck. If the stress level exceeds the number the panic check failed, and the warden can choose to read the card or hand the card to the player. After resolving the effect, the card gets shuffled back in.
The cards have a name and a flavour text at the top and their effects at the bottom. The effect marked with a bolt is a one-time immediate effect. While the effect marked with a hourglass is a "Temporary Condition". Temporary Conditions stay with the player and are not shuffled back in the deck until the next time the player looses stress.
Some Cards might have an escalation effect, an escalation effect is marked with a ↪ and a Number. They are in effect if the stress level matches or exceeds the listed level.
Considerations
For me, the biggest reason for trying to implement some type of cards in mothership, is wanting some of the beautiful artworks that make up most of the Modules to actually end up on the table. I also love cards as little rule reminders, stuff you usually would mark down on a sheet (in this case conditions), can be quicker handed out and don't slow the player down.
Having said that cards as with rules do imply a lot of mechanical fidelity and tend to make us focus more on the effect on the games mechanics rather than the roleplay opportunity. So id like to invite you the warden to use these for exactly that, a chance for roleplay. If a player wants to act the effect out, let them. If a player finds a creative way of healing a temporary condition, that should heal it. Don't let the rule text define every aspect of the cards effect.
